Self-esteem and cancer treatment
Look Good Feel Better is a programme of free skincare and make-up workshops to help women and teenagers suffering from the visible side effects of cancer treatment. Running in the UK since 1994, this practical and very effective programme is supported by the beauty industry in over 25 countries worldwide with over 1.5 million women attending a workshop somewhere in the world since the service started.
Many of the side effects of cancer treatment are highly distressing as they can dramatically change a woman's appearance and body image. This, in turn, can have a significant impact on self-esteem, personal confidence and ultimately the strength and determination to overcome the difficulties of the treatment itself. Research studies have demonstrated the strong link between feeling confident in your appearance and self-esteem - never more evident than when facing the rigors of cancer treatment.
In its unique service, Look Good Feel Better combines peer group support from those going through similar experiences with the expertise in dealing with the physical side effects that cancer treatment has on appearance and self-confidence. Look Good Feel Better workshop participants often say that experimenting with new colours, learning some make-up and skincare 'tricks of the trade' and sharing experiences with other women undergoing treatment, can be the first step towards regaining control and moving forwards. The workshops are full of fun with participants leaving in high spirits. For families and friends, seeing someone they love looking better and feeling more confident can help them to maintain the kind of positive support that is so vital.
“I attended the look good feel better afternoon yesterday at the holistic centre at James Cook hospital, Middlesbrough. The products I received were amazing but more than that, the tips, expertise and support from both the facilitator and especially my beauty expert was 1st class. I cannot explain what a difference it has made to myself feeling and looking ‘normal’ again."
