A gene is a short section of DNA. DNA sits within the cells of our bodies and it carries the genetic code to make proteins.
Therefore genes, and the DNA from which they are formed, control our appearance, our growth and bodily functions - all of the information that makes each one of us unique. For example, how tall we are, the colour of our eyes, how good we are at fighting germs and what we look like.
