Self-tanning products, also known as sunless tanners or fake tan, offer a safe way to achieve a sun-kissed glow without exposing your skin to harmful UV rays. These are cosmetic products applied to the skin - not tablets, nasal sprays, or injections, which fall outside the scope of cosmetics.
Ingredients in self-tan products
The key ingredient in most self-tanners is DHA (dihydroxyacetone). When applied to the skin, DHA reacts with amino acids in the outermost layer of dead skin cells (the stratum corneum), creating a natural-looking bronze colour. This reaction is safe, does not involve UV light, and does not permanently change your skin’s pigment. Another ingredient sometimes used is erythrulose, which works in a similar way but develops more slowly. Some products combine both for a longer-lasting result. The colour usually lasts between 3 to 10 days, depending on the product and your skin’s natural renewal cycle.
Self-tan products do not usually provide sun protection
While many self-tanning products include moisturising ingredients to keep skin soft, they do not usually provide sun protection. If your product does not list an SPF or show the UVA logo, it won’t protect you from sunburn or long-term sun damage. You’ll still need to apply sunscreen if spending time outdoors.

Self-tan use during pregnancy
Self-tanners are considered safe to use during pregnancy and breastfeeding, though it’s best to avoid applying them to the breast area to prevent contact with your baby. There is no evidence to suggest that topical cosmetics affect the safety of breast milk.
Innovations in self-tanning
Some moisturisers now include gradual tanning agents like DHA or erythrulose, giving skin a light, buildable glow with regular use. There are also sunscreens that combine UV protection with self-tanning ingredients, allowing you to achieve a tanned look without sun exposure while also shielding your skin from harmful rays.
Self-tanning products offer a convenient and safer alternative to sunbathing or tanning beds, giving you a radiant glow without the risks associated with excessive UV exposure.
