Salicylic Acid

Salicylic acid is a very useful cosmetic ingredient with a number of different functions.

Salicylic acid is an exfoliating ingredient with the chemical structure of a beta-hydroxy acid (BHA).  This means it promotes the turnover of surface skin cells.  Salicylic acid is able to dissolve in oil, making it very effective at removing excess oil and dead skin cells from pores. It is commonly used in products for oily, blemish-prone skin and can help reduce the appearance of blackheads, whiteheads and spots while leaving skin feeling smoother. 

Its exfoliating ability means it is also effective as an anti-dandruff ingredient because salicylic acid helps loosen and break up skin flakes on the scalp, clearing them away. 

It is also effective against unwanted microbes in our cosmetics.  It helps stop the growth of certain bacteria and fungi, protecting products against spoilage.
