Squalene is a naturally occurring oil found in plants and animals, including olives, wheat germ, and even our own skin.
Squalene plays a key role in maintaining skin hydration and elasticity, making it a popular ingredient in skincare and cosmetic products. Because pure squalene can be unstable, many products use a more stable version called squalane, which offers similar benefits but with a longer shelf life. Whether derived from plants or synthesized sustainably, squalene-based ingredients help nourish and protect the skin, leaving it soft, smooth, and radiant.
Historically, squalene was sourced from shark liver oil but now, squalene is produced synthetically. It is not sourced from animal origin. Chemical companies have developed innovative ways to produce squalene whilst minimising their environmental impact; for example, through fermentation processes.
